</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today we're going to focus on the present perfect tense and, more specifically, several words that are typically associated with it -although in future years you will see that they can be used in other tenses as well!</span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">First of all, let us very quickly revise when we use the present perfect, especially in contrast with the past simple:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<iframe frameborder="0" height="400" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="//www.slideshare.net/slideshow/embed_code/43734691" width="476"></iframe>
</div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To cut a long story short (<i>en resumidas cuentas</i>), use the present perfect:</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</span>
<br />
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For <b>life experiences</b> (they are finished, they happened in the past, but <u>I don't know when</u>)</span></li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is in this context that we typically use <i>ever </i>and <i>never</i>:</span></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>Have you ever swum with dolphins?; Have you ever tried bungee-jumping?</i></span> </div>
</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>I've never eaten Viatnamese food.</i></span></div>

<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For actions that started in the past and <b>still continue now</b>.</span></li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is in this context that we typically use the words <i>for</i> and <i>since</i>.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<iframe frameborder="0" height="400" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="//www.slideshare.net/slideshow/embed_code/43734967" width="476"></iframe>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you would like to have more information about <i>for</i> and <i>since</i>, click for <a href="http://www.curso-ingles.com/gramatica-inglesa/for-since-ago.php">a detailed explanation</a> with plenty of examples that you can also listen to. </ul>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Finally, there are three other words that are normally used in the present perfect:</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold;">just</i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold;">, </span><i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold;">already </i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">and</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold;"> </span><i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold;">yet</i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">. Read the information below to understand their <u>meaning</u> and their <u>position</u> in the sentence.</span></div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We use <i><b>just</b></i> for something that has very recently happened (<i>acabar de</i>). We place it in the middle of the sentence, between <i>have</i> and the participle:</span></li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;"><i>I've <u>just</u> learnt how to use </i>for<i> and</i> since.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">I've <u>just</u> been to the supermarket</span></i>.</span></div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We use <b><i>already</i></b> in <u>affirmative</u> sentences to mean 'sooner than expected'. We generally place it between <i>have</i> and the participle, but it can also appear at the end of the sentence:</span></li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>I've </i><u style="font-style: italic;">already</u><i> finished reading Dracula / I've finished reading Dracula </i><i><u>already</u>.</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've <u>already</u> been to London three times / </span></i><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've been to London three times <u>already</u>.</span></i></div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We use <i><b>yet</b></i> in <u>negative</u> and <u>interrogative</u> sentences. We place it at the end of the sentence:</span></li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I haven't started Sherlock Holmes <u>yet.</u></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Have you been to England <u>yet</u>?</span></i></div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;">BUT remember</span>: we can also use <i>already</i> in questions when we expect a positive answer</span></li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Have you already started revising for the exam?</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And now comes the practice!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.esl-lounge.com/student/grammar/2g7-just-yet-already.php" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>Just</i>, <i>already</i> and <i>yet</i> in context</a></li>

</ul>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To finish today's entry, here you have two websites to practise some of the grammar we have seen <u>already</u> :)</span></div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://mansioningles.com/gram39_ej1.htm">Revise the present simple and continuous</a>.</span></li>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Remember that revising is even more important than studying something for the first time! :)</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTab9IZ_bqNWxHUwbdKR8MqQDVpNPzYqzL7M9Izgv0lFkfJKkoAT8u66noY272Shk5XZXu6Do7HY6pCzJFl4DLcWJcGT6X26nAMypEOgl0gZ0PioPcJFWWZkaCa6SyUDCh7-lVUT6BUQM/s1600/Whether-if.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="Whether or if" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTab9IZ_bqNWxHUwbdKR8MqQDVpNPzYqzL7M9Izgv0lFkfJKkoAT8u66noY272Shk5XZXu6Do7HY6pCzJFl4DLcWJcGT6X26nAMypEOgl0gZ0PioPcJFWWZkaCa6SyUDCh7-lVUT6BUQM/s1600/Whether-if.jpg" height="122" title="" width="320" /></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hi there!</span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today I post a grammar lesson on the difference between </span><i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>if</strong></i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> and </span><i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>whether</b></i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">. These two words normally pose problems for English students, since the translation into Spanish is the same in both cases (</span><i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">si</i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">). Here I'll post an explanation on when to use each. Hope it helps!</span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In very general terms, we use <i><strong>if</strong></i> in <u>conditional sentences</u> and <i><strong>whether</strong></i> to show that <u>two alternatives</u> are possible. In the cases where both are possible, <i>whether</i> is understood as more formal.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">That said, let us look at both conjunctions in some deeper detail:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<h3>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #0b5394; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><b><i>If</i> and <i>whether</i> are interchangeable in the following contexts:</b></span></h3>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><u><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">IN REPORTED OR INDIRECT <i>YES/NO </i>QUESTIONS:</span></u></li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>She asked if / whether I'd be attending the party.</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i style="background-color: white; color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Do you know if / whether dinner will be ready soon?</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i style="background-color: white; color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I don't know if / whether she's coming or not.</i></div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><u><i style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"WHETHER / IF ... OR ... " </i><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">CON</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">S</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">TRUCTIONS</span></u></li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>I'd really like to know <u>whether / if</u> he's lying <u>or</u> telling the truth.</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></span></h3>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: x-large;">Use ONLY <i>whether</i> in the following contexts:</span></span></h3>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><u>TO PRESENT TWO ALTERNATIVES:</u></span></li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>Let the principal know whether you'll attend the meeting</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">(there are two alternatives: you'll attend the meeting or you won't. You have to inform the principal in either case).</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>Let the principal know if you'll attend the meeting</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">(this sentence is grammatically correct, but the meaning is different. In this example, the principal is only be told if you'll attend the meeting. Therefore, <i>if you'll attend the meeting</i> is a condition, it doesn't present two alternatives).</span></div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><u style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">AFTER PREPOSITIONS:</u></li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The other day in class some of you asked me about nouns which are always singular, and nouns which are always plural. This is important for the ageement (<i>concordancia</i>) with the verb and pronouns.</span></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Well, here you have a complete list of those nouns!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hello everyone!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today I write about <strong>comparatives</strong> and <strong>superlatives</strong>!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here I leave you with a powerpoint presentation with the basics of how you form comparatives and superlatives in English. I hope you find it useful!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="355" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="//www.slideshare.net/slideshow/embed_code/11631686" style="border-width: 1px; border: 1px solid #CCC; margin-bottom: 5px; max-width: 100%;" width="425"> </iframe><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 5px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong> <a href="https://www.slideshare.net/anabuenoamaro/comparatives-and-superlatives-11631686" target="_blank" title="Comparatives and superlatives">Comparatives and superlatives</a> </strong> from <strong><a href="https://www.slideshare.net/anabuenoamaro" target="_blank">Ana Bueno Amaro</a></strong> </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">How do we choose between <span style="color: #0b5394;">adjective + <i>-er/-est</i></span> or <span style="color: #38761d;"><i>more/the mos</i>t</span>? It depends on the number of syllables!</span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Suffix <span style="color: #0b5394;">-er/-est</span>: for 1 syllable adjectives, and 2 syllable adjectives <u>that end in -y</u> (for example, <i>happy, easy).</i></span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><span style="color: #38761d;">More / the most</span></i>: for the rest of adjectives.</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here you have a few examples of the different types of comparatives:</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hi there!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today I'm going to talk about the difference between the words <i><strong>near</strong> </i>and <i><strong>nearby</strong></i>. Their meaning is very similar; the difference is how they are used in the sentence.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><span style="color: #0b5394;"><strong>NEAR</strong></span></i> can be a preposition or an adverb. As a preposition, it is followed by a complement:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><span style="color: #38761d;">I live <u>near the museum</u>; </span></i><i><span style="color: #38761d;">There is a supermarket <u>near here</u>.</span></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As an adverb, <i>near</i> appears at the end of the sentence:</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><i><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The next bus stop is quite <u>near</u>.</span></i></i></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">She's getting nervous because her wedding is very <u>near</u>!</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><strong><span style="color: #0b5394;">NEARBY</span></strong></i>, on the contrary, is an adjective, and it can appear before and after a noun.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>There is a <u>nearby church</u>.</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The <u>nearby town</u> is famous for its wine.</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There is a <u>park nearby</u>.</span></i></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>Nearby</i> can also appear "alone", but it is still an adjective: <i><span style="color: #38761d;">the shop is nearby/very expensive</span>. </i>Or an adverb! <i><span style="color: #38761d;">I live nearby (= I live near here)</span></i></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Finally, here I post a video of a teacher explaining all this (remember that you can activate the subtitles!):</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hi there!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today we are going to be concerned with <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">emphatic structures</span></b>. English offers many different ways to give prominence to specific parts of the sentence and we'll explore all of them little by little.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In this entry we are going to focus on </span><strong style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">cleft </strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">and</span><strong style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> pseudo-cleft sentences</strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">, which allow us to emphasize different parts of the sentence by dividing it into two parts (these two parts will be marked with a double slash // )</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="color: #0b5394;">Cleft sentences</span> </strong>are formed with <i>it is/it was + </i>emphasized element + relative clause. Different parts of the sentence can be emphasised in this way:</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<div class="Ejemplo" style="line-height: 150%;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">1.<span style="font-size: 7pt; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;">
</span></span></span><!--[endif]--><span lang="EN-US">Dave lent me his car last week.</span></span></i></div>
</div>
<div class="Ejemplo" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 82.35pt;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">a.<span style="font-size: 7pt; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;">
</span></span></span><!--[endif]--><span lang="EN-US">It was <u>Dave</u> // who/that lent me his car last week.</span></span></i></div>
</div>
<div class="Ejemplo" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 82.35pt;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">b.<span style="font-size: 7pt; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;">
</span></span></span><!--[endif]--><span lang="EN-US">It was <u>his car</u> // that/which Dave lent me last week.</span></span></i></div>
</div>
<div class="Ejemplo" style="line-height: 150%; margin-left: 82.35pt;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i style="line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span lang="EN-US">c.<span style="font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal;">
</span></span><span lang="EN-US">It was <u>last week</u> // that/when Dave lent me his car.</span></span></i></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We can also find examples with </span><i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">because</i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">:</span></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It was because he was angry // that he didn't come to the cinema.</span></i></div>
</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="color: #0b5394;">Pseudo-cleft sentences</span></strong> are introduced by <i>what </i>and the emphasis is postponed to the end (in cleft-sentences the emphasis is at the beginning):</span></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>Dave lent me his car last night --> What Dave lent me last night // was <u>his car</u>.</i></span> </div>
</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>I love rainy days --> What I love // are <u>rainy days</u>.</i></span> </div>
</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>You need a rest --> What you need // is <u>a rest</u>.</i></span></div>
</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We can also emphasise events using the auxiliaries <i>do/did</i>:</span></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>Peter forgot his keys at the cinema --> What Peter did // was (to) <u>forget his keys at the cinema</u>.</i></span></div>
</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>We are destroying our planet --> What we are doing // is (to) <u>destroy our planet.</u></i></span></div>
</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Last but not least, we can also start a sentence with <i>all</i> to mean "the only thing".</span></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I only need you --> All I need // is <u>you</u></span></i></div>
</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Some of you suggested it was synonymous with “in fact”, although in some cases it can also mean something like “certainly”, “very” or it can even be used to express surprise - “you’re telling me!” (¡</span><i style="color: #444444;">no me digas!</i><span style="color: #444444;">).</span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<div style="color: #444444; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To start with, the word <i>indeed</i> originates from the Latin phrase <i>in dede</i>, which meant “in truth”. This meaning can clearly be seen in all of the following four uses:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul style="color: #444444;">
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When it is used after <i>very</i> + an adjective/adverb, it has a clearly emphatic meaning: </span></li>
</ul>
<i><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Thank you <u>very much indeed</u>.</span></i><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I was <u>very happy indeed </u>to hear about your results!</span></i></div>
<div style="color: #393318; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It can be used to emphasize a positive statement or answer:</span></li>
</ul>
<i style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">That is indeed the person I was talking about.</span></i><br />
<i style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">They are indeed braver than most people.</span></i><br />
<i style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">‘Was he very upset?’ ‘Indeed he was!’</span></i><br />
<i style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">‘Do you agree?’ ‘Yes, indeed.’</span></i><br />
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">At the beginning of a sentence, it is used to complete or add information to a statement. In other words<span style="color: #444444;">, </span><i>indeed</i> provides emphasis or indicates that the sentence is evidence/an example of what was said previously.</span></li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Yes, I passed the exam. Indeed, I got the highest mark in the whole class.</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">You don’t have to thank me. Indeed, I am delighted to help.</span></i></div>
<div style="min-height: 14px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i></i><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>The economic crisis has a negative influence on how much we spend. </i><i>Indeed</i><i>, foreign investments have never been as low.</i></span></div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As an interjection, <i>indeed</i> indicates surprise or sarcastic doubt. In this use, <i>indeed</i> is often the only word in the sentence.</span></li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #38761d;">"He thinks she'll marry him??" "Indeed!" </span>(¡Vaya si lo piensa!)</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I hope you now have a clearer idea of how to use the word <i>indeed</i>! If you still have any questions or doubts, or simply want to say how useful you found this entry, feel free to post a comment below!</span></div>

<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><b><i>B2, C1</i></b></span></h3>
<h3>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>"Saxon genitive ('s) or of + noun?</b><b>... that is the question."</b></span></h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMWNZdXHy6JMcfEtV1-53I_NOSM8M-GzXtO-biDCYTVicG60JJcsPIhiqT3ZEwqmJZZrsVdX0rHPjpsHzsGGSOAK60BtBHxkb3H4r3RHn5LUg2QOXcaQYUxCztkv6A1NKq8z5cn9ffUCk/s1600/question-mark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMWNZdXHy6JMcfEtV1-53I_NOSM8M-GzXtO-biDCYTVicG60JJcsPIhiqT3ZEwqmJZZrsVdX0rHPjpsHzsGGSOAK60BtBHxkb3H4r3RHn5LUg2QOXcaQYUxCztkv6A1NKq8z5cn9ffUCk/s1600/question-mark.jpg" height="200" width="131" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Choosing between the Saxon Genitive ('s) or the structure "<i>of</i> + noun" can sometimes be difficult. Below I include all the factors that influence the choice. I'm sorry if the explanation is a bit too technical, but it's the only one there is...</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To start with, it is important to note that there are lexical, syntactic, communicative and relational factors influencing the choice between the Saxon genitive and a prepositional phrase (<i>of</i>).</span></div>
<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Lexical factor </b>(related to vocabulary)</span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When the possessor is a <u>person</u>, the genitive is preferred, <i>e.g.</i> <span style="color: #38761d;"><i>John's boat</i></span>.</span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Syntactic factor </b>(related to grammar)</span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If the noun has a very long modifier, we prefer the <i>of</i>-construction, <i>e.g.</i></span><br />
<i><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The answer of the student who was sitting next to the window</span></i><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">(<b>NOT</b> <strike>The student who was sitting next to the window's answer</strike>).</span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Communicative factor</b>, depending on where we want to lay emphasis:</span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><span style="color: #38761d;">The world's <u>economy</u></span></i> --> emphasis on <i>economy</i>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><span style="color: #38761d;">The economy of the <u>world</u></span></i> --> emphasis on <i>the world</i>.</span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Relational factor</b> (related to the relation between the words)</span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">- Partitive meaning: the <i>of</i>-construction is preferred --> <i><span style="color: #38761d;">A glass of water; a pint of beer</span></i></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
- Object relation: it favours the <i>of-</i>construction: <i><span style="color: #38761d;">The imprisonment of the murderer </span> </i>(they put the murderer in prison - object)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
- In subject relations both are equally used: <i><span style="color: #38761d;">the arrival of the train / the train's arrival</span> </i>(the train arrived - subject).</span><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaXFjZm89wQxD5VAnLYz47WFendhTG3EJinECoE2s3OMBjhGyKT04GD1ot1YqzzozDVY3NIUi34vGl6GZWwC5UhvK3VBIUA0OkCxvhtnNW3Wn5cg-glU8iHD9kp7su25TmTRZHknMhuts/s1600/clipart-thumbs-up-happy-smiley-emoticon-256x256-8595.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaXFjZm89wQxD5VAnLYz47WFendhTG3EJinECoE2s3OMBjhGyKT04GD1ot1YqzzozDVY3NIUi34vGl6GZWwC5UhvK3VBIUA0OkCxvhtnNW3Wn5cg-glU8iHD9kp7su25TmTRZHknMhuts/s1600/clipart-thumbs-up-happy-smiley-emoticon-256x256-8595.png" height="189" width="200" /></span></a><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
<br />
Well, I hope this explanation has been useful!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hello everybody!!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">How are you? I hope you are enjoying the weekend!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today we're going to talk about the difference between some words that are normally difficult for Spanish learners:</span></div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Much / Many</span></i></li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Too much / Too many</span></i></li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>How much...? How many...?</i></span></li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>Some / any</i></span></li>
</ul>
<b style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><i>Much</i> </b><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify;">and </span><i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: justify;">many</i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify;"> are used for quantities, and they mean "a lot of". The only difference is that </span><i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><b>much</b></i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify;"> is used for uncountable nouns (always singular), and </span><i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><b>many</b></i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify;"> for countable nouns (always in plural after </span><i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify;">many</i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify;">):</span><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>I don't want <u>much sugar</u> in my coffee.</i></span><br />
<i style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There are <u>many children </u>playing in the street.</i></blockquote>
</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggnPpL753311eI0Eo2-HT6nvS2uTnFIK782MVVFObc8xYR1rP-JwQ7KsubFO-EPci9pgijuXyjvKlJQmuOdDzWEIe-PrSX-Iy_EoQSr-RwOTTyHi8V4w8Uf-P8g-HODezCR3ytfMbC3Lc/s1600/Much-many.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggnPpL753311eI0Eo2-HT6nvS2uTnFIK782MVVFObc8xYR1rP-JwQ7KsubFO-EPci9pgijuXyjvKlJQmuOdDzWEIe-PrSX-Iy_EoQSr-RwOTTyHi8V4w8Uf-P8g-HODezCR3ytfMbC3Lc/s1600/Much-many.jpg" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If there is more than we would like, we use the expressions <i><b>too much / too many</b></i>. </span></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>There is <u>too much noise</u> in this room. I can't sleep.</i></span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>There are <u>too many students</u> in the class.</i></span></blockquote>
</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And to <b>ask</b> about quantities, we have the question words <i><b>how much / how many...</b>?</i></span></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><u>How much</u> water do you drink every day?</span></i><br />
<i><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><u>How many</u> sandwiches do you want today?</span></i></blockquote>
</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As you can see, <i>much</i> is always followed by uncountable nouns, and <i>many</i>, by countable nouns.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Check this video to revise this a little bit more:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="youtube" id="0DExrsKWvGc" style="border: none; display: block; height: 315px; margin: 0 auto; width: 560px;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">You can do this exercise to practise the <a href="http://www.better-english.com/easier/howmuch.htm">difference between how much / how many</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihX3iqPymRyk-W6rf2wd5xwC2DD_N4AyxA4COhaEgCyDh24GwGZIryQBwsAdB8ImshSxJRdO-IbmFjf2oaeTcnmhOuaFJWaieGspq8pu5dxr_kFOSMRgA_J2refUyvnORmxVG9TgiQ6Y8/s1600/Some-any.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihX3iqPymRyk-W6rf2wd5xwC2DD_N4AyxA4COhaEgCyDh24GwGZIryQBwsAdB8ImshSxJRdO-IbmFjf2oaeTcnmhOuaFJWaieGspq8pu5dxr_kFOSMRgA_J2refUyvnORmxVG9TgiQ6Y8/s1600/Some-any.jpg" height="168" width="200" /></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Finally, both for countable and uncountable nouns you can also use <i>some</i> or <i>any</i>. Which one do you use? It depends if the sentence is affirmative (<i>some</i>), negative or interrogative (<i>any).</i></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><br /></i></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><br /></i></span><i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: right;"><br /></i>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">These days we've been talking about health and eating habits. In one of the first sessions we discussed whether milk was good for the body or not . Here I post the video in case you may want to watch it again. If you open it directly on YouTube remember that you can activate subtitles. However, remember that they are computer-generated, so you may find many mistakes. Still, they are still helpful to follow the main ideas.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We've also talked about going to the doctor's, and we've learnt plenty of vocabulary related to illnesses and symptoms. Below you have two listening exercises about talking to a doctor:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

</ul>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">You might find them rather easy, as they are from the Intermediate level, but still they're good for practice.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We also discussed whether stress was good for you. Well, apparently it is! Check out the video below!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">About grammar, we've been revising the differences between the present perfect simple and continuous. Here you have quite a completely summary about when to use each:</span><br />

<br />
Here you have the first entry of the year! I'll regularly post a summary of what we've done in class but, most importantly, I'll also post extra material to consolidate and to expand what we do in the lessons.<br />
<br />
We've already advanced quite a lot and are almost finishing Unit 1! These days we've been revising tenses, question formation and auxiliaries. As for vocabulary, we've talked about relationships and also personality.<br />
<br />
If you want to continue revising <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">English tenses</span></b>, try the following exercises online:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.englishexercises.org/makeagame/viewgame.asp?id=6645">Revision of tenses 1</a>: here you have exercises with pairs of tenses (present simple <i>vs.</i> present continuous; past simple <i>vs.</i> past continuous; past simple <i>vs.</i> past perfect, etc).</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://elt.oup.com/student/headway/advanced/a_grammar/unit02/hwy_adv_unit02_1?cc=global&selLanguage=en">Revision of tenses 2</a>: here you have a gapped text which combines all tenses.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.englishexercises.org/makeagame/viewgame.asp?id=3636">Revision of tenses 3</a>: here you have gapped sentences which combine all tenses.</li>
</ul>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div>
Below you have some other useful <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;"><b>personality</b></span> adjectives!</div>

<br />
Since we came back from Christmas we've practically fully covered Unit 4, related to crime and punishment.<br />
<br />
One of the first days we watched a video about the dramatic news of the incident occurred in India. If you wish you watch the video again to practise your listening, I post it below. Remember that you have the whole transcription, so you can check it as you listen, if necessary.<br />

I'm pretty sure that most of you regularly check newspapers online, even if it's only for 10 minutes to check the headlines (<i>titulares</i>). Well, why not do so in English? Simply by flipping through the website you'll be doing 5-10 minutes of reading in English every day. Below I post several links to different newspapers and news channels online, also indicating if they are more oriented towards the left or the right wing. None is better than the other; simply choose the one you like best, or decide to check a different one every day, as you prefer:<br />
<br />
<b>1. Newspapers in the UK:</b><br />

As far as grammar is concerned, in this unit we covered "introductory/anticipatory <i>it</i>" and the perfect aspects. Please, remember that you have extra practice in your <b>workbook</b>, but here I also leave you with a powerpoint presentation which I'm sure you'll find useful:<br />

Last week we started Unit 5, about secrets, lies and truths. So far it's turning out to be quite an interesting unit! Below I post the video we watched about "how to spot a liar". Be careful! Your body might give you away!<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/7xVx_fzJKx0" width="560"></iframe> <br />
<br />
Finally, on Friday we devoted the session to talking about "time", "time bandits" and expressions related to time (make sure you get the copies). We ended the lesson with a song entitled "On top of the world", by Imagine Dragons. Quite uplifting!! Here you have it for those who couldn't come to class!<br />

<br />
How was your weekend? I hope you enjoyed it, although the weather wasn't too good!<br />
<br />
In this entry I post a summary of what we did last week, and also some extra material you might find interesting.<br />
<br />
On Monday we did a little bit of <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #0b5394;">revision</span></b> and we also started Unit 3 talking about <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #0b5394;">jobs</span></b>. We did an activity where you had to write a job for every letter of the alphabet. Some letters were a bit difficult, but you almost (<i>casi</i>) completed all the alphabet! :) We also learnt some <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #0b5394;">expressions</span></b> such as <i>flexible working hours</i>, <i>opportunities for promotion</i>, <i>sick pay</i>, <i>holiday pay,</i> etc. Make sure you learn them!<br />

In this <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/multimedia/london/unit5/listen1_js.shtml">link</a> you can do a <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #0b5394;"><b>listening</b></span> about working conditions. On Wednesday we worked with the structures <i><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #0b5394;">have to/must; don't have to/mustn't</span></b></i> and we wrote "A class contract", with rules for the students and also for the teacher. You can do a little quiz <a href="http://www.englishclub.com/grammar/verbs-modals-have-to-must-not-quiz.htm">here</a> to revise. In the second hour we did the test.<br />
<br />
Finally, I post another <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #0b5394;">listening</span></b> called "What's your ideal date?". Click <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/general/expressenglish/2011/02/110210_ee_dating_page.shtml">here</a> to listen to what some people in London answered! For <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">homework</span></b>, remember to do the copy about the articles (<i>a(n) / the)</i> and about <i>have (got) to</i>. You also have to correct your composition and give me your final version.<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In the previous entry I posted some information to revise Unit 1. Here I do the same with Unit 2!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In this unit we have talked about fast food, first meetings, love and relationships, stories and how to start and finish a conversation!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
About grammar, we revised how to form the <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">past simple</span></b> and the <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">past continuous</span></b>, and when we use them. Be very careful with the pronunciation of the -<i>ed</i> past. The rule "PoKaSH FiCHaS Te Doy" can help!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here you have the uses of the past continuous, so that you can revise them (if you want to see it bigger, go to the <a href="http://www.englishpage.com/verbpage/pastcontinuous.html">original page</a>, but <b>only</b> look at uses <b>1 to 4</b>):</div>

On Wednesday we celebrated Halloween. Here you have a powerpoint presentation with a summary of the story we read:</div>
<br />
<div id="__ss_9927223" style="width: 425px;">
<iframe frameborder="0" height="355" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://www.slideshare.net/slideshow/embed_code/9927223" width="425"></iframe> <br />

View more <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/" target="_blank">presentations</a> from <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/anabuenoamaro" target="_blank">Ana Bueno Amaro</a> </div>
</div>
And here you have a video to learn how to carve a pumpkin!<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/GdI2wzQxNDg" width="560"></iframe><br />
<br />
Basically, what you need to do is to remove the top of the pumpkin and take out all the seeds (<i>semillas</i>). Then draw a face on the pumpkin and cut it with a knife. Finally, put a candle inside! If you try to make a jack-o-lantern, please bring it to class the next day! :)<br />
<br />
I hope you're enjoying the bank holiday! :)Ana Buenohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08401439195588360652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7363556292968816047.post-33795535962524120492012-11-03T12:49:00.000+01:002014-01-23T12:32:02.199+01:00Subject questions; jobs; free timeHi again!<br />
<br />
In this entry I'm going to post some information to revise Unit 1, and then I'll do the same with Unit 2.<br />
<br />
At the beginning of the course we did several activities to know each other (some of you met for the first time!), and in the third week you did your first oral presentations. In groups of 3, you talked about someone important from an English speaking country. Thank you once again for your truly great effort :)<br />
<br />
Below (<i>abajo</i>) you have a brief summary of the main grammar and vocabulary we have seen in the unit, so that you can revise at home and do some activities on-line:<br />
<br />

<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">SUBJECT QUESTIONS</span></b><br />
<br />
In Unit 1 we revised how to form normal questions. Remember the word <b><i>QUASI</i></b> (<b>QU</b>estion word + <b>A</b>uxiliary + <b>S</b>ubject + <b>I</b>nfinitive).<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span lang="ES-TRAD">Imagine I have the following sentences:</span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<ul>
<li>Josh met <u>my sister</u> <u>last night</u>.</li>

</ul>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
I can ask a question for the underlined elements using the QUASI structure:</div>

<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">WRITING</span></b><br />

In Unit 1 you wrote two compositions: your profile (page 7) and an informal letter (Porfolio 1). Please, learn the structure of an informal letter and the useful expressions you can use.<br />
<br />
<br />
So there you have the basics of Unit 1! I hope the links help you to revise a little bit and to practise your listening!</div>

<br />
I hope you've had a very nice weekend! :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwlgoi7OmruQrXYRiFjua9CDgUHHO0nZ3wYJnz6Dv1H44D-nr4dR3pN31JfElkexRqCXfL94jBsaXE8Pn39R4lQrBgfmdE22A9qOOzvU8PGqN3o0RiSbsHvvt9avKC8nT12QI5kPffRZub/s1600/FromHell.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwlgoi7OmruQrXYRiFjua9CDgUHHO0nZ3wYJnz6Dv1H44D-nr4dR3pN31JfElkexRqCXfL94jBsaXE8Pn39R4lQrBgfmdE22A9qOOzvU8PGqN3o0RiSbsHvvt9avKC8nT12QI5kPffRZub/s200/FromHell.jpg" height="194" width="200" /></a></div>
Last week we had the test on the book <i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;"><b>The Last Sherlock Holmes Story</b></span></i>. I hope you enjoyed reading it. I personally found it very interesting: it is said that Sherlock Holmes was Jack the Ripper! If you want to learn a bit more about this serial killer, you can watch the film "<b>From Hell</b>" (2001), with <b>Johnny Depp</b>. In original version, of course :)<br />
<br />
That day we also did an activity called "Can you think of...?" And you had to think about two things you could swim across, two things you could go through... etc. Make sure you revise those <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;"><b>prepositions</b></span>!!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
We also corrected Progress Checks 8 and 9, and the photocopy about <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">Phrasal Verbs</span></b>. Remember that phrasal verbs are verbs followed by one (<i>sit down</i>) or two particles (<i>put up with</i>). You will learn many phrasal verbs in the next years, so try to write all of them separate, not with your general vocabulary. For every phrasal verb, always include <u>an example</u>.<br />
<br />
On Wednesday you practised the structure "<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">used to</span></b>" with Leah. Remember, it is used to talk about habits in the past, only. For habits in the present we use <i>normally</i>, <i>usually</i>, etc. After that, you did an exercise with <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;"><b><i>just</i>, <i>already</i> and <i>yet</i></b></span>. I was surprised to see you didn't remember those words!! <a href="http://eslzone1.tripod.com/grammarinter/_yet.htm">Here</a> you have an exercise to practise. You can also check <a href="http://eoibasiclevel2.blogspot.com.es/2011/12/weeks-10-and-11.html">this blog entry</a> (12th December) to revise it.<br />
<br />
In my hour, we talked about the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;"><b>passive voice.</b></span> Here you have some exercises to practise a bit more! First of all, you should practise how you form the passive voice in the <a href="http://www.ego4u.com/en/cram-up/grammar/passive/exercises">present simple</a>, the <a href="http://www.ego4u.com/en/cram-up/grammar/passive/exercises?02">past simple</a>, the<a href="http://www.ego4u.com/en/cram-up/grammar/passive/exercises?03"> present perfect </a>and in the <a href="http://www.ego4u.com/en/cram-up/grammar/passive/exercises?04">future with will</a>. Once you know how to form the passive, you need to decide when to use it! <a href="http://www.ego4u.com/en/cram-up/grammar/passive/exercises?text01">Here</a> you have some information about the <b>Statue of Liberty</b>. Try to complete it correctly!<br />
<br />
To finish, we also checked the pronunciation of the words in the photocopy about <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;"><b>clothes</b></span>. Remember that in English it is not enough to know how you write a word (spelling). You also need to know how to pronounce it. Otherwise (<i>de no ser así</i>), people will not understand you when you speak!!<br />
<br />

<br />
For homework, you have to do the activities on Portfolio 10 (workbook) and then write a <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">composition</span></b> with your opinion about the following sentence: "<b>Our lifestyle is better and healthier today than in the past</b>"<br />
<br />
See you tomorrow!Ana Buenohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08401439195588360652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7363556292968816047.post-20211155408942369532012-05-05T13:08:00.000+02:002014-01-23T12:33:44.730+01:00Pronunciation of -ed ending; used toHello everyone!!<br />
<br />
I hope your weekend has started well!! Although the weather is miserable... I hope the wind goes away soon! :)<br />
<br />
In the last two weeks we've finished Unit 9, where we talked about everyday problems, problems with neighbours, adjectives of feelings, how to make invitations, etc. We also revised how to pronounce <i>-ed</i> at the end of words. Remember the rule:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #351c75;"><b>/t/: PoKaSH FiCHaS</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #351c75;"><b>/id/: Te Doy</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #351c75;"><b>/d/: the rest</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #351c75;"><b><br /></b></span></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
If you want to improve your <b>pronunciation</b>, you can check <a href="http://elt.oup.com/student/englishfile/preint/c_pronunciation/?cc=global&selLanguage=en">this link</a>.<br />
<br />
On Wednesday we started Unit 10 and we talked about fashion and shopping. We saw some differences between men and women and we also learnt the structure "used to".<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
If you want to practise a bit more, here you have a variety of exercises:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.englishgrammarsecrets.com/usedto/exercise1.swf">Exercise 1</a>: matching.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.englishgrammarsecrets.com/usedto/exercise2.swf">Exercise 2</a>: put the words in the correct order.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.englishexercises.org/makeagame/viewgame.asp?id=252">Exercise 3</a>: I've also found this exercise which uses a song by Madonna called "This used to be my playground". It's a bit old, but it's good for listening and grammar practice! :)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;"><b>homework</b></span>, please do exercises 2 and 3 on pages 88 and 89, and the copy about the passive. Thank you :)</div>

<br />
I hope your weekend is off to a good start (<i>nice expression to learn!</i>), although the weather is absolutely miserable!! Let's hope this howling wind goes away soon!<br />
<br />
Last week we corrected the unit about "<b>The Natural World</b>". It's a lot of vocabulary, I know, but, remember, take things calmly: sit down, select the words you don't know, copy them in your notebook and check them regularly.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Last week we also started to talk about <b>crime</b> and we learnt some words such as:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTbMs4_1j2sJyKwITSpwUv0mZoJ58fqlXgfVWGIaPnK8eXBePLlE9gtaoqD9_ruxOUnJIcU36cH-KNCnjC5XFSECdxQoXzt5s9fsEI6ZcgKf0TGNKrtjlrtc9RjhU9RdY8QW2kO2CXlOjj/s1600/Captura+de+pantalla+2012-05-05+a+las+12.25.29.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTbMs4_1j2sJyKwITSpwUv0mZoJ58fqlXgfVWGIaPnK8eXBePLlE9gtaoqD9_ruxOUnJIcU36cH-KNCnjC5XFSECdxQoXzt5s9fsEI6ZcgKf0TGNKrtjlrtc9RjhU9RdY8QW2kO2CXlOjj/s320/Captura+de+pantalla+2012-05-05+a+las+12.25.29.png" height="198" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
On Tuesday we didn't have class because it was a bank holiday, and when we came back on Thursday I gave you back your <b>compositions</b>. I'm very glad to say that I can see a big, big improvement in comparison with the first compositions you sent me. Well done, and keep up the good work, guys. Keep up the good work :)<br />
<br />
With Leah you talked about <b>World Book Day</b> and in my hour we corrected the unit about the <b>Conditionals</b> and some exercises which were lagging behind (<i>que se nos habían quedado atrás</i>). If you want to practise a bit more, try doing the following:<br />
<a href="http://es.scribd.com/doc/92483412/Conditionals" style="-x-system-font: none; display: block; font-family: Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 12px auto 6px auto; text-decoration: underline;" title="View Conditionals on Scribd">Conditionals</a><iframe class="scribd_iframe_embed" data-aspect-ratio="0.706697459584296" data-auto-height="true" frameborder="0" height="600" id="doc_22464" scrolling="no" src="http://www.scribd.com/embeds/92483412/content?start_page=1&view_mode=list&access_key=key-1quq0agsxo36qkvxwzko" width="100%"></iframe><br />
<br />
<br />
This week we also had class on <b>Friday</b>. <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">Thanks</span></b> once again for all the people that came. I truly, truly appreciate your effort :)<br />
<br />
We talked about famous criminals and serial killers, and we focused on <b>Jack the Ripper</b>, who really existed! Below I post some of the newspaper articles that were published after his murders (1888). Really interesting!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We then watched some fragments from the film "From Hell" and with Advanced Level 1 A we also had time to play a game called "Ullaby"... All the suspects were found guilty!! If you're interested in this case, check this <a href="http://www.jack-the-ripper.org/">website</a>, where you have plenty of information and videos about the mysterious Jack the Ripper.<br />
<br />
Have a nice weekend! :)<br />

<br />
Last week we started Unit 9 and we talked about <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">everyday problems</span></b>. We also learnt the <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">first conditional</span></b>, which is used to talk about things that are probable to happen:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<u style="color: #0b5394;"><i>If</i></u><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #0b5394;"> + present simple, </span><i style="color: #0b5394;">will</i>. For example: <i>If I have time tonight, we'll go out OR we'll go out if I have time tonight</i></blockquote>
We saw other words that can be used instead of <i>if</i>, like <i>when</i>, <i>before</i>, <i>after</i>, <i>until</i> and <i>as soon as</i>.<br />
<br />
Click <a href="http://www.englishclub.com/grammar/verbs-conditional_2.htm">here</a> for a basic explanation of the first conditional, and <a href="http://personales.ya.com/mjandres/archivos/CONDITIONAL1.pdf">here</a> if you want some more details. And if you want to practise with some online exercises, click <a href="http://www.englishgrammarsecrets.com/firstconditional/exercise1.html">here</a>.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Finally, we worked with the <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">infinitive of purpose</span></b>:</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;">:( </span><strike><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;">I come here for to learn English.</span></strike><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;">:( </span><strike><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;">I come here for learning English.</span></strike><b>:)</b> <b>I come here to learn English.</b></div>
</blockquote>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
If you didn't come to class, <a href="http://madridingles.es/post/1168615460/el-infinitivo-de-finalidad-infinitive-of-purpose">here</a> you have an explanation. And <a href="http://www.englishexercises.org/makeagame/viewgame.asp?id=4685">here</a> you can practise with an exercise online.</div>
<br />
On Wednesday you revised this with Leah and then in my hour we did a "special" listening test. Some of you failed, but the results were not bad at all! :)<br />
<br />
After that we corrected the copies about "for, since and ago" and the first conditional. To end with, we listened to the song "The show must go on", by Queen. Thanks, Mª Ángeles, for the activity!<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/4ADh8Fs3YdU" width="420"></iframe> <br />
<br />
For homework, you had to write a recipe. <a href="http://mansioningles.com/listening09.htm">Here</a> you have a <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">listening</span></b> from <a href="http://www.mansioningles.com/">www.mansioningles.com</a> (very good website!!) where Steph talks about cooking. You have three different exercises. Try to do them! :)Ana Buenohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08401439195588360652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7363556292968816047.post-10654321474791240782012-02-17T12:40:00.000+01:002014-01-23T12:37:08.798+01:00Comparatives & superlatives (powerpoint presentation)Good afternoon everyone!<br />
<br />
Here you have the summary of the last two weeks (I couldn't update the blog last weekend).<br />
<br />
Last week we learnt some <b>personality adjectives</b> and we revised them on Monday, together with (<i>junto con</i>) adjectives to describe physical appearance. Congratulations! You have quite a good memory! :) Then we revised the use and form of the comparative and superlative:<br />

Last week we also celebrated Charles Dickens's bicentenary with Leah. We learnt a little bit about his life and remembered some of his most famous novels. After that we continued with your oral presentations. They are all extremely entertaining! :)<br />
<br />
This week we have celebrated St. Valentine's watching the film "A good year", starring Russel Crowe. It was beautiful, wasn't it?<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
For <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">homework</span></b>, you need to do:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Photocopy about comparatives and superlatives.</li>
<li>Photocopy about friends and family.</li>
<li>Activities about the film.</li>
</ul>
<br />
Remember that the final version of your <b>composition</b> is for <b>Wednesday</b>.<br />
<br />
Have a nice weekend!<br />

<br />
On Tuesday we talked about ideal jobs and we practised the vocabulary on page 44. After that, we watched a <a href="http://news.sky.com/home">Sky News</a> video about what some people called "the best job in the world" (I'm afraid you can listen up to second 56; there's no sound afterwards).<br />

<br />
On Thursday we had one hour with Leah. You played a game called 'telephone', and it was real fun! After that you read a text about gliding and you did an interesting exercise in groups to check your pronunciation. I hope you learnt how to pronounce quite a few of the difficult words!<br />
<br />
In my hour, we starting correcting the photocopy about modal verbs in the past. I know the handout is a bit dense, but don't worry; we'll practise more in class. For the moment, <a href="http://www.eslgold.com/grammar/past_modals.html">here</a> you have a straightforward explanation of modal verbs, and you can do an online exercise <a href="http://www.tolearnenglish.com/exercises/exercise-english-2/exercise-english-53195.php">here</a>.<br />
<br />
On Friday we started with your oral presentations. Thanks very much for all the effort and time you've put into it. We all enjoyed what you had prepared, and we learnt quite a few things as well!<br />
<br />
Juanjo (Avanzado 1 A) talked about Iceland and he mentioned the famous volcano that made most European airports close. Can anybody remember the name of that volcano? I guess you don't! It was "Eyjafjallajökull". Many journalists had problems pronouncing it, and I remembered a CNN video called "Name that Icelandic Vocano". Check it out below:<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Vn8QCdhvug4" width="560"></iframe><br />
<br />
After that we continued correcting some homework from the previous day, and we listened to the song "What makes you beautiful", by One Direction:<br />
<br />

Here you have the activity we did in class (to correct it, simply click <a href="http://www.metrolyrics.com/what-makes-you-beautiful-lyrics-one-direction.html">here</a> to have the complete lyrics)<br />

See you all tomorrow!Ana Buenohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08401439195588360652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7363556292968816047.post-13109650304500904232011-12-12T10:34:00.000+01:002014-02-04T22:12:03.956+01:00Future continuous and future perfectHello everyone!<br />
<br />
Well, the first term seems to be coming to an end!<br />
<br />
On our last days of class we finished correcting a few exercises that were lagging behind. We did a <b>mock test</b> so that you could have an idea of what to expect in the one we do tomorrow, and it also helped you learn some useful vocabulary, collocations and prepositions.<br />
<br />
We also corrected the photocopy about future tenses. It was pretty much of a revision, but there were two new things: the <b>future continuous </b>and the <b>future</b> <b>perfect</b>.<br />
<br />
Exercises 1 and 2: Future continuous <a href="http://www.ego4u.com/en/cram-up/grammar/future-1-progressive/exercises">I</a> and <a href="http://www.aulafacil.com/CursoIngles/Ejercicios17.htm">II</a><br />
Exercises <a href="http://mansioningles.com/gram41_ej1.htm">3 and 4</a>: <i>will</i> vs. present simple; <i>will</i> vs. <i>will be +ing</i> (future simple vs. future continuous)<br />
Exercise 5: <a href="http://www.aulafacil.com/CursoIngles/Ejercicios18.htm">Future perfect</a><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>We also learnt some vocabulary related to food, and Leah brought some Christmas recipes! Why don't you try preparing one of them for the Christmas party at the school (21st December)? :)<br />
<br />
Finally, here I post the key to exercises 1, 2, 3 on page 16. It's strange because some people have it corrected, and some don't. At any rate, here you have the key, just in case:<br />
<br />
<b>Exercise 1:</b><br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>directed</li>

<li>plot</li>
<li>played</li>

</ol>
<br />

<li>supporting</li>
<li>adaptation</li>
<li>estimated</li>
<li>enjoyed</li>
<li>part</li>
<li>set</li>
</ol>
<br />
<b>Exercise 3:</b> (Here I write the odd word out)<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>live</li>
<li>beatiful</li>
<li>modern</li>
<li>large</li>
<li>ugly</li>
</ol>

<br />
Last week we finished correcting the handout on Reported Speech and we learnt the use of some reporting verbs. Remember that each verb is different, so you have to learn them separately.<br />
<br />
I found this document from the University of Adelaide (Australia), where you have a wide array of verbs classified according to their meaning and whether they're weak, neutral or strong. On the second page they tell you which ones are followed by a preposition, <i>-ing</i> or a <i>that</i>-clause:<br />
<a href="http://es.scribd.com/doc/74002049/Reporting-Verbs" style="-x-system-font: none; display: block; font-family: Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 12px auto 6px auto; text-decoration: underline;" title="View Reporting Verbs on Scribd">Reporting Verbs</a><iframe class="scribd_iframe_embed" data-aspect-ratio="0.706697459584296" data-auto-height="true" frameborder="0" height="600" id="doc_87917" scrolling="no" src="http://www.scribd.com/embeds/74002049/content?start_page=1&view_mode=list&access_key=key-rozm2y6jka87mjmsoh0" width="100%"></iframe><script type="text/javascript">(function() { var scribd = document.createElement("script"); scribd.type = "text/javascript"; scribd.async = true; scribd.src = "http://www.scribd.com/javascripts/embed_code/inject.js"; var s = document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(scribd, s); })(); </script><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
After that, we worked with a handout about what to do in awkward social situations. We watched a video where Andrew was offered food and drink he didn't like... but he didn't know what to do! On Thursday we continued working with this and we saw some expressions we could use. Surfing the Internet I've found a short article from the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;"><b>CNN </b></span>talking about what to do when you can't remember the name of the person you're talking out. Check it out <a href="http://articles.cnn.com/2009-06-30/living/rs.react.awkward.situations_1_public-places-sick-child-greet?_s=PM:LIVING">here</a>!<br />
<br />
Finally, we talked about <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">Thanksgiving</span></b> and <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;"><b>Black Frida</b></span>y. I don't know if you watched it on the news, but Friday turned out to be quite a violent day because of some crazy shoppers. Check out this article entitled "<a href="http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/11/25/big-crowds-big-mischief-on-black-friday-and-thursday-too/"><b>Big crowds, big mischief on Black Friday</b></a>". You also have several <u>videos</u> which show what happened when shops opened.<br />
<br />
And that's all for now!<br />
<br />
See you tomorrow!Ana Buenohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08401439195588360652noreply@blogger.com0
